    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

The first round of STAAR testing is just around the corner. Please remember that the campus is closed to all

visitors on those days, including breakfast or lunch visits. All of the STAAR testing dates are listed at the

    bottom of the Press.

    Safety Is Important!

We had two serious near misses – really close calls - last week in which people in the crosswalk were almost

struck by cars! Scary! Our crossing guards have indicated that these situations happen when people are

looking down at their cell phone during drop off or pick up times, or when people are in such a rush, they are

not watching and waiting for the crossing guards’ signals. No text message, phone call, or time crunch is

worth the potential injury of another person. Please help us keep everyone safe!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

Practice is what commits skills into long term memory and creates automaticity. Learning the right way to

shoot a free throw in basketball is important. But shooting baskets over and over and over is what makes a

person good at sinking free throws. The same thing is true in reading! Students learn the skills at school, but

it is the practice every day that makes them good readers. Please make sure your child reads at least 20

minutes each day over Spring Break so they don’t lose their momentum!

    College T-Shirt Day Tomorrow – March 1st

Students are encouraged to wear their college or university shirts this Wednesday as we raise awareness about all

the post-secondary education opportunities available to our kids. We have College T-Shirt days the first Wednesday

of every month, but any day is a great day to get kids thinking about higher education. A reminder that this

Saturday is Explore UT, where the University of Texas campus is open to families and filled with free activities.

Student Attendance is a Big Deal!

Researchers and educators agree that student attendance is one significant indicator of a child’s success in

school. While teachers will do the extra work needed to help your child make up what they missed, the learning

for your child is not the same when they are not a part of the activity and the class discussion. We encourage

parents and guardians to be thoughtful of this when scheduling vacations, appointments, and other events that

may require a student to miss all or part of a school day.

    A+ Financial Tips

A+FCU Financial Tip: Protecting yourself from fraud starts with simple steps. Review your accounts, shred documents,

and limit the sharing of personal information. It’s the little things that make a big difference.

A+FCU Financial Tip: Have you looked at your credit report recently? If the answer is no, this should be a high priority on

your to-do list. Ensure your personal information is correct, check the listed accounts for accuracy, and report errors

    immediately.

A+FCU Financial Tip: Be skeptical, read the fine print on everything, and be wary of giving information. Trials and

lucrative offers, for example, aren’t always what they seem. Should you provide payment information for something

    that is free?

A+ FCU Financial Tip: Fraudsters are sly. They send emails or call to make us aware of suspicious activity but need

information to verify our identity. Don’t click. Stop there. Open a new link or hang up and call your financial institution.

    Better safe than sorry.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

The PfISD School Board has named Christi Siegel as the principal for Riojas Elementary. Mrs. Siegel has served

as principal at Windermere Primary since 2006. Prior to that role, she served as assistant principal at

Windermere Elementary from 2004-2006, supervisor of instructional technology for PfISD from 1999-2004,

and teaching positions at Timmerman, Brookhollow and Copperfield Elementaries from 1994-1999. She is

very excited to become a Riojas Patriot!

The Riojas Community Continues to Give to Others

 We had a wonderful Furry Friendship Week and gave pet product donations to three area animal

    shelters!

 $ 5,850.71 was raised for Jump Rope for Heart by 113 students in Kinder-2nd grade.

 $602.87 was raised for American Diabetes Association by 35 students in 3rd-5th grade.

African American History Month at Riojas

 In a previous Press, I explained our class poster project. They are finished and are displayed in the

main hallway from the music room all the way to the library! Classes are performing gallery walks in

the main hallway and learning so much from the hard work of their peers. Please come by and see

    them yourselves!

 In Art class, as part of this celebration, 4th graders studied traditional African masks and how they

influenced the artistic styles of artists from the U.S. and around the world. Students discussed the form

and function of masks from different parts of Africa, and used what they learned to create a mask of

their own. They utilized some of the colors, materials, and symbolism found in African masks in their

work, and added personal touches along the way. The results have been fun, colorful, and very unique.

Check out our masks during 4th grade’s upcoming Fine Arts Night, Tuesday, Feb. 28th!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

Congratulations to the Riojas 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year, Jennifer Reed, and the Humanitarian of the Year,

Amanda Gustafson! Our amazing staff of outstanding educators nominated and voted for Mrs. Reed and Mrs.

Gustafson to receive this honor. High praise indeed, and well deserved!

    Important Arrival and Dismissal Reminders

    •  If you are picking up your child before the end of the day, we ask that you pick them up by 2:15 at the

latest. This gives us adequate time to locate your child, and gives the teacher adequate time to

communicate the change to whichever staff member regularly dismisses your child. Last minute pick-ups

cause confusion and increase the potential for misinformation to the teachers.

    •  Please watch the crosswalk areas carefully! Recently, we have had multiple cars go around other cars that

are stopped at the crosswalks or not coming to a complete stop at stop signs and looking both ways before

proceeding in the school zone. Let’s all leave a few minutes earlier and not feel rushed, so that we can put

    student safety first!

    Accountability Reports

Last week, Mr. Ramos hosted an information meeting to review our Texas Accountability ratings and reports, which

provide data on student performance and participation on standardized assessments. If you were unable to attend, this

information, including the Federal Report Card, is available online at http://www.pfisd.net/Page/478 We can also

provide hard copies of the report upon request through the front office.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

I wanted to let you know about a change at Riojas. Mr. Ramos is in the process of transitioning to Cele Middle

School as one of their Assistant Principals. He will be an asset to Cele, just as he has been an asset to Riojas!

Currently, he is spending some days each week at both campuses, but will be full time at Cele by Spring Break. We

    will miss him greatly!

Winter Dance and Talent Show – February 10th!

    African American History Month

There are a variety of activities going on in classrooms in honor of this celebration. One activity is the class poster

project in which each class chose a historical figure to research and then created a poster with important and

interesting information about that person. Our main hallway will be filled with these wonderful posters by Friday,

the 10th! If you are coming to the Dance or visiting the school any time this month, please take some time to

examine and appreciate the class posters, while learning about important contributions made in history.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

We truly appreciate the response from our community in regards to our Painless Fundraiser. We will continue

until the Pokemons are gone. The money raised will be used to further support activities and programs that

benefit Riojas students! Don’t forget, at the end of the fundraiser, I will have my hair dyed, and the grade level

that raises the most money will get to pick the color. So far, 1st Grade is in the lead!!!

Help Needed for the P.E. Department:

    •  Coach Hughes is looking for a couple to help teach ballroom dance for a few days to our 5th graders and a couple to teach country dance [both line and partner] to our 4th graders. If you or someone you know likes to Ballroom Dance and/or Country Dancing please contact Coach Hughes. Cell 512-966-6952
    •  Field Day is Friday, May 19th. Cele National Junior Honor Society students have always volunteered to help, but it would be great to have a 2nd group as well. If you know of a group of young adults or adults that like to volunteer for community events, please contact Coach Hughes. Cell 512-966-6952
    •  Jump Rope For Heart Fundraiser (Grades K-2) and School Walk for Diabetes (Grades 3-5) will both be starting on January 24th and ending on February 8th. The PE Department only asks that the kids read over the information with a parent, discuss how your family can fight heart disease and/or diabetes, and discuss whether or not raising money is an option. Our goal is to have most kids return an envelope with just a few dollars that they have earned. Information will be sent home on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

district would love your input before moving forward. Below there is a link that you can click on to see the

proposed draft and to give your feedback. If you have input, please respond by this Friday, January 27th!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

I value the partnership between school and home which allows us to constantly reinforce this important outlook

and mindset for our children to use in their day to day decisions: The time is always right to do what is right.

    -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mark Your Calendar – STAAR Testing Dates – This applies to everyone…

    - For the parents of students in PK through 2nd grade: On the dates listed below, the campus is closed to

visitors in order to maintain testing security. This means that students must be dropped off at the front doors,

and visitors are not allowed into the building during at all. Visitors are not allowed to eat breakfast or lunch

with a student on these days.

    - For the parents of students in 3rd through 5th grades: Please put these dates on your calendar. Please do not

schedule appointments for your children on these days.

    •  March 28 – 4th Grade Writing and 5th Grade Math
    •  March 29 – 5th Grade Reading
    •  May 8 – 3rd and 4th Grade Math
    •  May 9 – 3rd and 4th Grade Reading
    •  May 10 – 5th Grade Science

A Word About our Pokemon Painless Fundraiser – The “Why”

Public schools receive money from the government and the district to provide a quality education for our

students. However, there are laws that govern how a school may use that money. There are many things that

we, the Riojas Staff, feel are important components in supporting student success at an even higher level

which cannot be purchased with those funds. For instance:

    •  Awards ribbons and certificates to recognize achievements
    •  Incentives/prizes purchased with Patriot Points which students earn for making great choices.
    •  Snacks for students taking the STAAR test.
    •  Popcorn Parties for various grade level contests.
    •  Special performers, such as those that presented on Diversity Fair Day. Ask your child about the Love of China performance, the Native American Dancers, and the African Storyteller performance.
    •  We have used some of this money in the past to add permanent equipment to the playground, such as the rock wall, or to purchase extra playground “toys” like balls and jump ropes.
    •  And much more….

The only way to pay for the added value these things provide to students, is to do a fundraiser. We have

chosen the Painless Fundraiser instead of asking you to sell cookie dough, pizza, chocolate, knick-knacks,

    wrapping paper, etc.

    Incentives:

    1. The class at each grade level that raises the most money will receive a popcorn/GoNoodle party.

    2. The grade level that raises the most money will get to pick the color used to dye Mrs. Rebecek’s hair.

    3. If we reach our goal, Mr. Ramos will have RES shaved into the back of his head.

The Painless Fundraiser will run until, at least, Spring Break. So, take this opportunity to reinforce a work ethic

with your child by having them do chores to raise the money for a $10 donation in order to receive a

Pokemon. A fundraiser flyer is attached.

XSTREAM Night and the RES Science Fair Were an XSTREAM Success!

Thank you to all the families that were able to join us for this awesome evening! It took a village to make this

enjoyable and educational experience happen! Please join me in recognizing Amy Tietsort Hovinga for her

leadership and coordination of the event. In addition…

 The following students will proudly represent Riojas at the Austin Energy Regional Science Festival on

February 18th. Congratulations to: Brooke Abel, Rebha Acharza, Peyton Fish, Brooklyn Garza, Tyler

Gottschalk, Nicole Sanchez, Ayden Schneider, Elaina Thanos, Emma Turner, and Joseph Walker.

The following parents/family members volunteered time to help make the science fair run smoothly: Linda

Gonzales, Jenny Cooke-Schuchmann, Lilliana Garcia-Ng, Nyree Birt, Janae Birt, and Linda Tietsort.

 The following staff members also pitched in extra time during teaching breaks to make our scientists feel at

home presenting: Tia Birt, Alina Tarango, Cyndi Brittain, Shelley Carr, Jo Bazan, and Jeff Hughes.

 A HUGE thank you to Brad and Amanda Gustafson for bringing in the enormous ladder for the Egg Drop!

    Help Needed:

 Coach Hughes is looking for a couple to help teach ballroom dance for a few days to our 5th graders and a

couple to teach country dance [both line and partner] to our 4th graders. If you or someone you know likes

to Ballroom Dance and/or Country Dancing please contact Coach Hughes. Cell 512-966-6952
