    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

I value the partnership between school and home which allows us to constantly reinforce this important outlook

and mindset for our children to use in their day to day decisions: The time is always right to do what is right.

    -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mark Your Calendar – STAAR Testing Dates – This applies to everyone…

    - For the parents of students in PK through 2nd grade: On the dates listed below, the campus is closed to

visitors in order to maintain testing security. This means that students must be dropped off at the front doors,

and visitors are not allowed into the building during at all. Visitors are not allowed to eat breakfast or lunch

with a student on these days.

    - For the parents of students in 3rd through 5th grades: Please put these dates on your calendar. Please do not

schedule appointments for your children on these days.

    •  March 28 – 4th Grade Writing and 5th Grade Math
    •  March 29 – 5th Grade Reading
    •  May 8 – 3rd and 4th Grade Math
    •  May 9 – 3rd and 4th Grade Reading
    •  May 10 – 5th Grade Science

A Word About our Pokemon Painless Fundraiser – The “Why”

Public schools receive money from the government and the district to provide a quality education for our

students. However, there are laws that govern how a school may use that money. There are many things that

we, the Riojas Staff, feel are important components in supporting student success at an even higher level

which cannot be purchased with those funds. For instance:

    •  Awards ribbons and certificates to recognize achievements
    •  Incentives/prizes purchased with Patriot Points which students earn for making great choices.
    •  Snacks for students taking the STAAR test.
    •  Popcorn Parties for various grade level contests.
    •  Special performers, such as those that presented on Diversity Fair Day. Ask your child about the Love of China performance, the Native American Dancers, and the African Storyteller performance.
    •  We have used some of this money in the past to add permanent equipment to the playground, such as the rock wall, or to purchase extra playground “toys” like balls and jump ropes.
    •  And much more….

The only way to pay for the added value these things provide to students, is to do a fundraiser. We have

chosen the Painless Fundraiser instead of asking you to sell cookie dough, pizza, chocolate, knick-knacks,

    wrapping paper, etc.

    Incentives:

    1. The class at each grade level that raises the most money will receive a popcorn/GoNoodle party.

    2. The grade level that raises the most money will get to pick the color used to dye Mrs. Rebecek’s hair.

    3. If we reach our goal, Mr. Ramos will have RES shaved into the back of his head.

The Painless Fundraiser will run until, at least, Spring Break. So, take this opportunity to reinforce a work ethic

with your child by having them do chores to raise the money for a $10 donation in order to receive a

Pokemon. A fundraiser flyer is attached.

XSTREAM Night and the RES Science Fair Were an XSTREAM Success!

The following parents/family members volunteered time to help make the science fair run smoothly: Linda

Gonzales, Jenny Cooke-Schuchmann, Lilliana Garcia-Ng, Nyree Birt, Janae Birt, and Linda Tietsort.

 The following staff members also pitched in extra time during teaching breaks to make our scientists feel at

home presenting: Tia Birt, Alina Tarango, Cyndi Brittain, Shelley Carr, Jo Bazan, and Jeff Hughes.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

This Thursday, students will experience the annual Diversity Fair. They will have the opportunity to learn about a

variety of countries and cultures, including: Russia, Germany, France, Spain, China, Africa, Bangladesh and more!

We invite students to wear attire that represents their cultural heritage, a specific country, or another culture of

their choice. Of course, that includes attire representing the U.S. and the great state of Texas!

Please Help Us Be Good Neighbors

We have very nice people that live across the street from Riojas, many of whom do not have students at our

school. We want to be neighborly to them! When parents and visitors are searching for parking at arrival,

dismissal and at large events, there are some parking choices that are not neighborly and portray a poor image of

the Riojas Community. Our families are the best, and we want everyone to know that!

So, to help put the RES community in the best light possible, please refrain from:

    •  Moving someones trash receptacle on trash pick-up day so that you can park in that spot.
    •  Blocking or partially blocking someones driveway.
    •  Blocking or partially blocking an entrance or exit from any of the school parking lots.
    •  Parking in front of peoples houses when you are visiting during the school day. During most school days, there are plenty of spaces to park in the parking lot. On Winter Party Day, that may not be the case, but please keep this in mind for most days.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    Lost and Found

If you visit the school any time this week, and you think your child is missing anything, please take a moment to

check the Lost and Found. All items left will be donated on Friday, December 16th.

The Spirit of Giving at Riojas – the Response is Amazing

“DECK THE HALLS” - non-perishable food items.

“TOYS FOR TOTS” – new, or very gently used toys.

Thank you for your caring and generosity!

    Volunteer Shout Out:

Thank you to Staci Young and her amazing group of volunteers for providing the Holiday Market for the students of

    Riojas!!

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

Thank you for your patience and cooperation with Friday’s indoor dismissal. Again, it only affects car riders. All

other students will dismiss as they usually do. We will use this process any time the temperature or wind chill is 32

degrees or below, or during heavy rainstorms.

    Riojas XSTREAM Night – January 12th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

This is a come and go family event where you and your child can participate in engaging activities in the areas of

science, technology, reading, the arts, and math. Just a few highlights:

    •  Science Fair projects will be on display. Come and see the hard work of some of our students and get great ideas for your child’s future project!
    •  Family Egg Drop Contest. This was a big hit last year! A flyer is attached with more details.
    •  Learn how to make “snow” and “moon sand” at home with simple ingredients!

    family egg drop contest

    Check Out Our New Mural!

Thanks goes out to the Riojas Community for liking our 30 in 30 video in the fall. We had the most likes of any

elementary school in the district! Because of your help, we received a free mural that was painted by April Fried,

of The Savant Home, in our main hallway next to the music room. Make sure to look for it the next time you are at

    school. It is awesome!!

    Cold Weather Reminders

 Students who previously walked or biked to school might be dropped off during cold weather days. That

means more cars in the drop off line than usual, which means…leave your house a few minutes earlier!

Unless the temperature or wind chill is 32 degrees or below, students go outside for recess. Please dress

    them accordingly.

 We live in Texas! So, when the morning temperature is in the 40’s and the afternoon temperature is in the

70’s jackets are worn and then shed. Children often drop their jackets wherever they happen to be, despite

all of our reminders. Therefore, it is imperative that you write your child’s name in their jacket so that we

can return it to them. While you are doing that, please write their name on their lunch boxes and water

    bottles as well!

    Help Needed:

Hoping that the time you have spent with your children has been full of fun and has made lasting memories.

RES staff is looking forward to seeing all of the bright and shining faces of our amazing students on Tuesday,

    January 3rd.

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

It is with a combination of sorrow and excitement that I announce to the Riojas community that I have been chosen

to open Mott Elementary in the fall of 2017. While I am sad to leave Riojas, I know that the staff, students and

parents who will continue to be part of this amazing campus will uphold and extend the nurturing environment and

learning opportunities that make this a great place for kids. I am also eagerly anticipating the opportunity to

facilitate the transition of many Riojas families to Mott Elementary, as we join together with new families, to

support and energize an equally amazing learning environment at the district’s newest elementary school.

Riojas XSTREAM Night – January 12th

A fun family event to participate in engaging activities in the areas of science, technology, reading, the arts, and

    Several Important Items

 It is important to put your child’s first and last name, and teacher’s name, on any notes that you send to the

office. With almost 1,000 students, it only makes sense that we have many students with the same name.

We even have duplicates of some pretty unique names!

 Our food service provider, Aramark is transitioning to a new menu system. Therefore, the January menus will be

delivered to us for distribution this coming week. For your child’s meal planning purposes an electronic copy is

    attached.

 Skate Night success: Thank you to all that attended the December Skate Night. We had 88 paid skaters and

will be getting a check for $261.00 from Austin Sports Arena! Mrs Tortosa's first grade class had the most

paid skaters and earned a free party in the gym.

    Volunteer Shout Out:

Thank you to Bobbi Barker for organizing the Cookies for Staff before the break. And, thank you to all of the

parents who donated cookies! The staff was overwhelmed by your generosity.

Thank you to these Riojas Community members for donating their time and efforts by presenting at the Diversity

Fair: Sabrina Zaman, Mignonette Griffiths, Tia Birt, Brianna Hinchey, Erica Egan, Paula-Rae Manning, Cele MS

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

I hope everyone had an amazing Thanksgiving break and that you were able to enjoy the always precious extra time with

your child. As we head into the three weeks of school before the winter break, we appreciate your partnership with us

in making reading, and learning, a high priority for our students.

The Spirit of Giving at Riojas

We are fortunate to live in a very caring, loving community, which encourages fostering that attitude in our children! We

have historically been one of the top donation sites for Blue Santa!

We have 3 ways to give back to our friends in need. During this season of giving, we invite you to join the Riojas Staff

with donations of non-perishable food items, new toys, and new or used coats!

“DECK THE HALLS” - We will collect non-perishable food items, such as canned and boxed food, to be shared

with Blue Santa of Pflugerville. You may send your items any time before Dec. 13. We will “Deck the Halls” of

Riojas, i.e. line the hallways with donated food items. Our goal is to make it down to the Library and back with

    donated food items!

“TOYS FOR TOTS” - We will also be collecting new toys until Dec. 13, for Blue Santa, in the bins located in the

front school office. All toys will go to help our neighbors in need!

“COATS FOR KIDS” - Please send a new or used coat to Riojas to be shared with a child who is in need! All coats

will be donated to the Good Will/Jack Brown/Junior League Coats for Kids Campaign.

Thank you for your caring and generosity!

    Evidence of Riojas Community Service

The third grade students, with the support of the Riojas parents and teachers, held a very successful Market Day. The

total amount of money donated to St. Jude is $2,569.51! That is amazing!

    From the PTO:

    Holiday Marketplace News:

We are gearing up for the holiday market December 6-8. This gives your child a chance to learn the joy of holiday giving

as they independently shop for gifts for their loved ones. Items range from $0.50 to $5.00. Additional information will

    come home soon.

To make this the most successful event we can, we need lots of help. There are three ways to volunteer:

    1. Sign-up to help pre-wrap, tag, and organize items. The PTO will have a prep event Dec 4th from 3-5 pm. Click

    here to sign-up: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F044BAFA929ABFF2-marketplace

    2. Volunteer to help on the days of the marketplace with shopping and wrapping. To sign-up to volunteer, go to

    www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F044BAFA929ABFF2-volunteer1

    3. Donate supplies. We are also asking for donation of wrapping supplies: tissue paper, bows, gift tags and ribbon.

To donate please bring all items to the office.

    FYI

Did you know that you can send a birthday message to your child, or any positive message on the school

marquee? Please contact the front office for details and pricing.

Our next Skate Night will be Friday, December 9 at Austin Sports Arena.

Every time your child purchases a cafeteria meal between December 1st and 9th, their name will be entered into

a drawing to win a bicycle.

Lost and Found is bursting at the seamsagain! Please label your childs belongings and check for lost items.

We will donate anything left over at the winter break.

    Picture Reprints

We have been in frequent contact with the photography company that took our school pictures, and have clearly

communicated that they made multiple mistakes which need to be rectified. The company, Life Touch, is reprinting all

student and staff photos and will deliver them to our campus within the week. We apologize for any inconvenience that

    this has caused.

Hosted by HHS Cheer on Saturday, December 10th, from 9-11 in the HHS gym. The Little Cheerleaders will perform at

the basketball game on December 16th. Join us as we learn chants, cheers, dances, stunting and

    From the Principal, Tammy Rebecek

We had an amazing Veteran’s Day with 320 visitors between our two assemblies. The students were so respectful

and attentive during the long program. I am so proud of them and the staff members who worked so hard to make

this a special event for the Veterans, the visitors, and the family of Jose Riojas.

    Thank Yous:

To Marisol Avila for spending hours helping to decorate the gym for Veteran’s Day. To Kristine and Jacob Bowker

for inflating hundreds of balloons used in the decorations. To Hannah Weber and Samuel Simcik from HHS for

playing “Taps” at our assemblies. To Kenna Impson for her hard work and help to turn the gym back into a gym

    after it was over.

    From the PTO:

We are very thankful for our teachers and staff and would love to be able to give every staff member a pie next

Friday! We also need 10-12 volunteers to help with packing them!

    Information Regarding Upcoming Boundary Realignment:

The opening of Elementary #21 could impact students at Riojas, Rowe Lane and Dearing elementary schools. Additionally, to relieve enrollment at Kelly Lane Middle School, there are proposed changes to the attendance zones for Park Crest and Pflugerville middle schools. Finally, to relieve enrollment at Highland Park Elementary, there are proposed changes to the boundaries for Brookhollow Elementary.

Over the next two months – before the board makes its final decision in January 2017, PfISD will hold seven community input sessions at the schools where students may be impacted by the proposed boundary changes. At these meetings, PfISD administrators will share information about the boundary proposal and listen to community feedback. That feedback will be shared with the Board of Trustees prior to its final decision.

For more detailed information about the proposed boundaries, timeline, community input sessions and more, visit http://www.pfisd.net/Page/6313.

Hoping that everyone remembered Daylight Savings Time!  Please understand that your child’s internal clock is off, and you will need to help regulate their sleeping and waking hours until they get back on schedule!

    Veterans Day Assemblies

We are asking students (and guests) to wear Red, White and Blue in support of this important occasion.  Assemblies will be held in the gym this year.  This is an amazing event that the Riojas Community looks forward to each year.  All visitors will be required to get a visitor’s badge, so please plan accordingly by giving yourself extra time to sign in through the office.

    8:00 a.m. – 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

    9:30 a.m. – PK, K, 1st and 2nd Grades

    Important Reminders

    ·       If you are going to change how your child goes home, please call the front office at 512-594-4100 before 1:30 p.m.  This allows us ample time to communicate this important information to the numerous staff members that help with dismissal.

    ·       If you are going to pick up your child for an appointment, please do so by 2:15 p.m.  That allows teachers and other staff ample time to work around that special request without it interfering

    Gifted and Talented Nomination Information

The nomination window for GT is from November 7 to November 18. A parent, administrator, counselor, or a teacher may nominate a child using the GT Nomination Form.  Please go to the following link that contains valuable information, including the nomination form:  http://www.pfisd.net/Page/308

We have wrapped up a very successful first nine weeks of school!  The partnership that we create between school and home, and your involvement with your child’s education, are paramount in helping our students “Soar to New Heights”. To help communicate our theme and its message, a great topic of conversation around the dinner table would be about setting goals and working to get better at something.  Giving your child examples of how you do this, as an adult, can be a very powerful motivator!

    College T-Shirt Day THIS WEDNESDAY

We are raising awareness about the many, many, colleges and universities our students could choose for their post-secondary education. Please encourage your child to wear an outfit to represent a college or university this Wednesday, November 2 and the first Wednesday of every month this school year. Even better, encourage your child to look for someone sporting a college or university that is unfamiliar and ask some questions to learn more.

    A+ Green Apple Club

Our next deposit day is this Thursday, November 3rd.

    deposit days

    Riojas Runners Club

Coach Hughes, with the help of some awesome parent volunteers, has set up the Riojas Runners Club so that students have before school and/or after school opportunities to run/jog laps.  This will help students work toward reaching their Marathon Kids goal of running 26.2 miles!  If they run every week, they could run two marathons!  Please see the attached flyer for more information.

    Veteran’s Day – November 11th

Assemblies will be held in the gym.  All visitors will be required to get a visitor’s badge.

    8:00 a.m. – 3rd, 4th and 5th Grades

    9:30 a.m. – PK, K, 1st and 2nd Grades

    ·       Every grade is working hard to get ready to thank those who have served our country, during our Veteran's Day Assemblies. I recommend checking out the Riojas music website at http://riojaselementarymusic.weebly.com for at home practice.

    ·       We honor students’ family members who are Veterans during the assembly. Please see the attached form for more information if you would like your family members’ information included in our slidesho

    ·       We invite students to enter a writing contest regarding Veterans Day.  The winner will be featured during the assembly.  Please see the attached form for more information.
