    Rocket Families,

Welcome back! I trust the past week has been rejuvenating to your family, and I am eager to see our students again.

March is Women’s History Month, and in the spirit of raising and educating the next generation of amazing women, I am passing on a couple of recommended reads I enjoy sharing with my own daughter:

Strong is the New Pretty: A Celebration of Girls Being Themselves – by Kate T. Parker

    - love this one for the beautiful montage of girls from every walk of life, proud and confident in who they are.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls: 100 Tales of Extraordinary Women – by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

    - the stories of 100 historic, heroic women, each told as a “bedtime story” in a single page with a vibrant illustration.

Plenty of upcoming events, so read on for more details of the weeks ahead, and be sure to scroll to the bottom for information on our upcoming Book Fair!

    Student Attendance Counts

Researchers and educators agree that student attendance is a significant indicator of a child’s success in school. Because of this, we are required to act whenever a child misses 10 days of school or is on-pace to miss 10 days for the year. Illnesses are unavoidable and keeping a sick child home is a must; therefore, we encourage parents to be thoughtful of this when scheduling vacations, appointments, and other events that may require a student to miss all or part of a school day.

Special Note regarding Current 4th Graders Zoned to Mott for 2017-2018

Please be aware that current 4th grade students zoned to Mott Elementary for next year are allowed to “be grandfathered” and complete their fifth grade year at Rowe Lane. However, you

must apply for a transfer to do so, and the clause does not apply to younger siblings. Please see the attachment and the information at this link:

    Rocket Families,

Next time you come by the school, be sure to check out a new display near the front office. We have upped our recess minutes this semester and would like to enhance our playground as well so that students have more options for play. So far, we have raised over $2,000 toward the cause! Thank you Mrs. Holland and Mrs. Shoaf for creating a fun way of tracking our fundraising:

A reminder that the arrival of Spring Break also signals the end of the 3rd nine-week grading period. At the 2nd grading period awards assembly, I asked students to reflect on what they have been working on, and a few of our students shared their successes at the assembly. I also asked students to take a moment and consider a goal. Consider asking your child about the goal or what makes him or her feel most proud about school – I would love to hear a few more stories shared at the next assembly.

    Rocket Families,

Plenty to be proud of at Rowe Lane this week. This coming Friday is Random Acts of Kindness Day, and if you saw or heard about the KXAN feature on Giving at Rowe Lane, you know we already are off to an incredible start. Our amazing coaching staff has rallied the Rockets to raise over $3,000 in just three short days of the Jump Rope for Heart campaign! Catch the announcements Monday morning for footage of just how committed they really are…

This past Friday our staff nominated and selected two of our faculty to be recognized for their exceptional work. Congratulations to Brett Stanley, our Teacher of the Year, and to Erika Cruz, our Humanitarian of the Year! Standing out among this extraordinary team of educators truly is OUTSTANDING. Mr. Stanley and Ms. Cruz exemplify the values of Rowe Lane, and I certainly have grown professionally for having worked alongside them. We are fortunate to have such leaders on our campus.

Not nearly as many events this week, but read on for more information, including Pre-K registration,

    Rocket Families,

To lead off this week, I want to thank everyone for coming out to our inaugural Glow Dance party. Participation was even greater than anticipated, and in addition to all the smiles and fun, we have made some great progress toward our playground equipment goal! I am so appreciative of our PTO steering committee, who planned and organized the event, and our volunteers – both planned and impromptu! – who helped with supervision and food service.

Secondly, congratulations to all of our newly published, student authors. We had many Rockets represented yesterday at The Write Stuff reading and recognition ceremony at Park Crest Middle School. Selected authors received a copy of the anthology, a copy of which will be housed in our library. Way to go, Rowe!

Lastly, a heartfelt shout out to a local couple with ties to Rowe Lane who stopped by unexpectedly Friday with checkbook in hand. Inspired by a story propagated through social media, they generously paid off all outstanding balances that had accrued in our students’ lunch accounts. Unbelievable, and yet so representative of the spirit of this incredible community!

As you stop by this month, I hope you have a chance to see some of the work our 5th grade students have created with our new student devices through Google Slides. We will display their research on significant African-American figures on the television in the foyer throughout the month of February.

Read on for more details on upcoming events,

    PTO Meeting TOMORROW

Our next PTO meeting will be adjusted to tomorrow, Monday, February 6, and I will hold a public meeting at 6:00pm just prior to the regular PTO meeting. This meeting is open to the public in order to hear more about our school’s Texas Accountability Performance Report and to ask any questions to learn more about our accountability system.

    Library Notes

Mrs. Stewart has showcased many of our titles written by or related to celebrated Black Americans from every genre. Encourage your child to expand his or her knowledge of Black history this month as we feature these selections. Also, come check out our brand new fiction, nonfiction and biography books. New books are located on tables with gold and black table cloths and in the library windows, including the 2017-2018 Texas Bluebonnet Books!

    A+ Deposit THIS WEDNESDAY

A+ Credit Union will be in the foyer this Wednesday morning during morning arrival to receive deposits for our Super Savers program and to share information on financial literacy. If you have not yet had the opportunity to hear what our partners at A+ can offer, consider stopping by this week!

    Toothbrush Exchange THIS THURSDAY

Dr. Bain’s office is coming on February 9th to deliver toothbrushes to all of the classrooms. Children are encouraged to bring in their old toothbrushes in exchange, but it is not required. Thank you to Dr. Bain and his staff for providing this free service to our community!

    Valentines Parties THIS FRIDAY

We will hold our Valentine’s Day parties Friday afternoon according to schedules that classroom room parents or teachers have communicated. Check in with your teacher if you need a student roster in order to share valentines with each student in your child’s class.

    Read Across America

March 2nd is Read Across America day, and students are encouraged to dress as a story book character. Rocket Families,

Quite a lot to communicate this week. First off, I am so proud of our UIL competitors, who showed off their skills this past Saturday at Pflugerville High School. A HUGE shout out to our teacher and parent coaches who have put in months of work prepping our students to enjoy not only this event, but also future academic success!

A reminder that Wednesday is an early release day AND college shirt day. Students will be dismissed at noon, and teachers will be engaged with professional learning throughout the afternoon. Should your child have any changes to his or her usual, after-school routine, please remember to communicate any relevant special instructions to the classroom teacher.

Attached this week you will find a copy of our school report card. Our next PTO meeting will be adjusted to Monday, February 8, and I will hold a public meeting at 6:00pm just prior to the regular PTO meeting. This meeting is open to the public in order to hear more about our school’s Texas Accountability Performance Report and to ask any questions to learn more about our accountability system.

Read on for more details about the weeks ahead,

    Parking Lot

A friendly reminder that students absolutely may not be dropped off in the parking lot. The parking lot is a high traffic area without staff supervision, and stopping to let a child out is unexpected, unsafe, and disrupts the flow of traffic during arrival. I certainly would appreciate our community’s help with passing the word to ensure our students’ safety.

5th Grade Middle School Parent Night THIS TUESDAY

All Middle Schools will host a parent night for parents of 5th grade students this Tuesday, January 31 from 6:00 – 8:00pm. Parents of 5th grade students can expect to hear important information on the transition to middle school, including course selection. Contact either Cele or Kelly Lane MS for more details.

    Glow Dance Party THIS FRIDAY

We are trying a new event at Rowe Lane this Friday with a Glow Dance Party this Friday, February 3. This will be a family event, so parents, please plan to remain in the building and to provide the primary supervision for your family. Pre-purchases of pizza can be ordered using this form through this Wednesday, February 1, and Glow-in-the-dark items will be available for purchase at the dance. Admission tickets are provided at the door for a donation, and all proceeds from this event will be used to update and enhance our permanent playground equipment. Volunteers are still needed in some key positions. With our growing community, we have staggered the evening’s schedule by grade level:

    Grades PreK – 2:

    - Eat in cafeteria from 6:00-6:45pm

    - Dance in gym from 6:45-7:30pm

    Grades 3-5:

    - Dance in gym from 6:00-6:45pm

    - Eat in the cafeteria from 6:45-7:30pm

In addition to local fundraising, please take a moment to enter Rowe Lane to win a $30,000 playground make over! Use this link and enter as often as once a day, every day through March 24.

    Rocket Families,

Happy Martin Luther King Day! I hope everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend surrounded by family and friends. Each year at this time I reflect on the life Dr. King led and recommit myself to the work that ensures each of our Rockets is inspired to dream big and equipped to make it happen.

On Friday, we took a bit of time out from our day so that each grade level could reflect on and celebrate achievements for the second nine-weeks. It was heartening to hear some of our students share what they had worked at and what made them most proud. To complement or conversations about goals, we are looking to leverage the power of students tracking their own progress, and you may begin hearing your child talk about his or her “data folders.” Our teachers will be coaching our students to grow as self-assessors of their learning in math. I would encourage you to check in with your child on this topic, and I also would welcome your feedback as we roll out this system campus-wide for the first time.

Read on for upcoming events, and I hope to see everyone at Science Night this Wednesday!

    Ben

    Science Night

This Wednesday, Rowe Lane hosts an evening of family-friendly, hands-on science investigations and presentations that has something to offer all ages! We invite you to join us for all the fun and activities on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00-7:30pm throughout the building.

    Rocket Bucks
We have enjoyed great success with our positive rewards system this year - many of our students have earned Rocket Bucks for being Respectful, Responsible, and Really Safe. They redeem their bucks each month for privileges and prizes, and we would love some parent volunteers to help us with distribution before school on reward weeks. Please take a look at the sign-up link below and pick a shift any time through the end of the year if you can help: http://tinyurl.com/RocketBucksVolunteer

    Spring Pictures

    Rocket Families,

Students had a very smooth transition back this past week, and I was impressed by how seamlessly our kids reengaged with their studies and routines. Report cards will come home in two shifts this week: Grades 2 - 5 will have report cards sent home with students tomorrow, Monday. Grades Kinder and 1st will receive report cards Wednesday.

I am proud of our Rockets and all their hard work and engagement with learning, and every educator knows success begins with parents in the home. Ensuring your child has predictable routines at home and being at school early and on-time each day makes a tremendous difference in itself. Also, I recognize we have an uncommon community where the support extends beyond individual households to all children at Rowe Lane. We see it in countless forms: help with reading groups; volunteer hours in the library, with Wednesday folders, or PTO efforts; material and financial donations; club sponsorship; and even the spirit of being a good neighbor.

If you are new to Rowe Lane or looking for a way to strengthen your connection to our school together with some amazing leaders, https://www.facebook.com/rlespto/https://www.facebook.com/groups/RocketFamilies/, and your classroom room parents all are friendly and accessible resources. Your child's teacher also would be more than happy to guide you to an opportunity that suits your comfort level and availability!

    Schoolhouse Rock Live!

Schoolhouse Rock Live! Will be performed April 27 and 29, 2017 on stage at Rowe Lane. Between now and that time we are seeking assistance from our community to help make this show a true RLES success. We are in need of people willing to donate materials, sound equipment, labor, acting skills, lighting equipment and direction, as well as other needs that may yet be unforeseen. A meeting of the minds is planned for Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please use following link to sign up for attending the meeting: http://tinyurl.com/SHRlesVolunteer

    Science Night

We are less than two weeks from Science Night, an evening of family-friendly, hands-on science investigations and presentations that has something to offer all ages. We invite you to join us for all the fun and activities on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00-7:30pm throughout the building.

    Rocket Families,

You may have heard the news, but in addition to exceeding our ambitious goal of 400 coats for Coats For Kids this year, Rowe Lane was the largest Elementary School Donor of the entire drive! We will be recognized on the KVET 98.1 morning show this Wednesday, December 7, at  7:20 a.m. – right during morning arrival time – so please tune in! Also, each RLES student will receive a free pass to Mt. Playmore for reaching our goal. Way to go, Rowe!

Congratulations also go out to Pflugerville High School, the largest high school donor again this year. It truly is an honor to be part of the Rowe Lane and PfISD community. We appreciate your individual charity and for spreading the word to benefit so many children. Thank you to Casey Holland and our PTO for organizing and driving this year’s campaign! Come by this Tuesday at 6:30pm for our monthly PTO meeting to hear what else is in store for this school year.

“Shout Outs” go to Mr. Bennett and the Rowe Lane Choir, who turned in another exceptional performance at last Friday’s Austin Spurs basketball game. We are so proud that our Rockets have been invited back and scheduled for this performance year after year. See the videos and pics at https://www.facebook.com/rlespto/ and catch the next Choir performance the evening of Monday, December 12, at the HHS Performing Arts Center.

Finally, Thank You for the donations that have been rolling in for our Painless Fundraiser and for grabbing a tag off the Giving Tree in the foyer. You can check out the bottom of this week’s message for these and other ways to directly impact our school.

Read on for more details regarding our last two weeks of this semester!

    PTO Meeting THIS Tuesday

Join us from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the Library for our monthly PTO meeting. As always, childcare for school-aged children is provided in the gym at no cost during the meeting.

    College Shirt Day THIS Wednesday

Throughout the year we are raising awareness about higher education, and one way is by sporting college and university apparel the first Wednesday of every month. This Wednesday, we encourage our students to join the RLES staff in representing the diverse institutions of higher learning, and to be curious and inquisitive with one another about those that may be unfamiliar.

    Attendance Boundary Meeting THIS Thursday

The opening of Elementary School #21 will impact attendance boundaries for Rowe Lane, Riojas, and Dearing Elementary Schools. Rowe Lane is hosting an information session this Thursday, December 8, from 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Library. More information, including the community meetings schedule and proposed boundary changes maps, may be found at this link: http://www.pfisd.net/Page/6313

    Spike in Late Arrivals

As a friendly reminder, students are able to enter the building as early as 7:10 a.m., can enter classrooms at 7:20, and must be in class by 7:40. We have noticed a steady increase in the number of students arriving tardy to class, which seems to correlate with the colder weather and more families opting to use the car line instead of walking/driving. Please anticipate that on-time arrival may require earlier departure as we move into the winter months.

    Parent Portal for Focus

PfISD uses Focus as our student information system. Among other things, parents have the ability to access student grades and attendance information. If you do not already have access, or if you need access information, please contact our Registrar, Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net , to get connected.

    Holiday Shoppe NEXT WEEK

Our Holiday Shoppe will be open for the week of December 12 - 15 in the science lab. Thank you to our PTO for providing this time-honored tradition that allows our students to do some "secret shopping" on their own for family and loved ones. Items are available for as little as $1 in order to accommodate any budget. The Holiday Shoppe also will be open the evening of Tuesday, December 13, from 6 – 8:00pm for family shopping.

    5th Grade Performance NEXT WEEK

We had some inquiries about parents attending the dress rehearsal during the school day for the 5th grade music performance. During the dress rehearsal, we fill the cafeteria with students from selected grade levels and cannot accommodate adult seating. Please do join us for the polished evening performance at 6:30pm on December 13!

    Parents’ Night Out

HHS Cheerleaders and Boosters are hosting a Parent’s Night Out on 12/10 and 12/17. Please take a look at the attached flier if you would like to take advantage of the opportunity and support HHS Cheer.

    Little Cheerleader Workshop

Hendrickson Hawk Cheer will be hosting a Little Cheerleader Workshop on Saturday, December 10th, from 9-11 in the HHS gym.   The Little Cheerleaders will perform at the basketball game on December 16th.  Join us as we learn chants, cheers, dances, stunting and tumbling!  Cost:  $30.00 (t-shirt included).  Sign up at this link
