    Rocket Families,

Happy Martin Luther King Day! I hope everyone enjoyed the three-day weekend surrounded by family and friends. Each year at this time I reflect on the life Dr. King led and recommit myself to the work that ensures each of our Rockets is inspired to dream big and equipped to make it happen.

On Friday, we took a bit of time out from our day so that each grade level could reflect on and celebrate achievements for the second nine-weeks. It was heartening to hear some of our students share what they had worked at and what made them most proud. To complement or conversations about goals, we are looking to leverage the power of students tracking their own progress, and you may begin hearing your child talk about his or her “data folders.” Our teachers will be coaching our students to grow as self-assessors of their learning in math. I would encourage you to check in with your child on this topic, and I also would welcome your feedback as we roll out this system campus-wide for the first time.

Read on for upcoming events, and I hope to see everyone at Science Night this Wednesday!

    Ben

    Science Night

This Wednesday, Rowe Lane hosts an evening of family-friendly, hands-on science investigations and presentations that has something to offer all ages! We invite you to join us for all the fun and activities on Wednesday, January 18, from 6:00-7:30pm throughout the building.

    Rocket Bucks
We have enjoyed great success with our positive rewards system this year - many of our students have earned Rocket Bucks for being Respectful, Responsible, and Really Safe. They redeem their bucks each month for privileges and prizes, and we would love some parent volunteers to help us with distribution before school on reward weeks. Please take a look at the sign-up link below and pick a shift any time through the end of the year if you can help: http://tinyurl.com/RocketBucksVolunteer

    Spring Pictures

Look for information on Spring pictures to be sent home this Wednesday. We will have photos taken next Thursday, January 26, and families will have the option to purchase pictures according to the details sent home.

    Rocket Families,

Students had a very smooth transition back this past week, and I was impressed by how seamlessly our kids reengaged with their studies and routines. Report cards will come home in two shifts this week: Grades 2 - 5 will have report cards sent home with students tomorrow, Monday. Grades Kinder and 1st will receive report cards Wednesday.

I am proud of our Rockets and all their hard work and engagement with learning, and every educator knows success begins with parents in the home. Ensuring your child has predictable routines at home and being at school early and on-time each day makes a tremendous difference in itself. Also, I recognize we have an uncommon community where the support extends beyond individual households to all children at Rowe Lane. We see it in countless forms: help with reading groups; volunteer hours in the library, with Wednesday folders, or PTO efforts; material and financial donations; club sponsorship; and even the spirit of being a good neighbor.

If you are new to Rowe Lane or looking for a way to strengthen your connection to our school together with some amazing leaders, https://www.facebook.com/rlespto/https://www.facebook.com/groups/RocketFamilies/, and your classroom room parents all are friendly and accessible resources. Your child's teacher also would be more than happy to guide you to an opportunity that suits your comfort level and availability!

    Schoolhouse Rock Live!

Schoolhouse Rock Live! Will be performed April 27 and 29, 2017 on stage at Rowe Lane. Between now and that time we are seeking assistance from our community to help make this show a true RLES success. We are in need of people willing to donate materials, sound equipment, labor, acting skills, lighting equipment and direction, as well as other needs that may yet be unforeseen. A meeting of the minds is planned for Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Please use following link to sign up for attending the meeting: http://tinyurl.com/SHRlesVolunteer

    Rocket Families,

You may have heard the news, but in addition to exceeding our ambitious goal of 400 coats for Coats For Kids this year, Rowe Lane was the largest Elementary School Donor of the entire drive! We will be recognized on the KVET 98.1 morning show this Wednesday, December 7, at  7:20 a.m. – right during morning arrival time – so please tune in! Also, each RLES student will receive a free pass to Mt. Playmore for reaching our goal. Way to go, Rowe!

Congratulations also go out to Pflugerville High School, the largest high school donor again this year. It truly is an honor to be part of the Rowe Lane and PfISD community. We appreciate your individual charity and for spreading the word to benefit so many children. Thank you to Casey Holland and our PTO for organizing and driving this year’s campaign! Come by this Tuesday at 6:30pm for our monthly PTO meeting to hear what else is in store for this school year.

“Shout Outs” go to Mr. Bennett and the Rowe Lane Choir, who turned in another exceptional performance at last Friday’s Austin Spurs basketball game. We are so proud that our Rockets have been invited back and scheduled for this performance year after year. See the videos and pics at https://www.facebook.com/rlespto/ and catch the next Choir performance the evening of Monday, December 12, at the HHS Performing Arts Center.

Finally, Thank You for the donations that have been rolling in for our Painless Fundraiser and for grabbing a tag off the Giving Tree in the foyer. You can check out the bottom of this week’s message for these and other ways to directly impact our school.

Read on for more details regarding our last two weeks of this semester!

    Ben

    PTO Meeting THIS Tuesday

Join us from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the Library for our monthly PTO meeting. As always, childcare for school-aged children is provided in the gym at no cost during the meeting.

    College Shirt Day THIS Wednesday

Throughout the year we are raising awareness about higher education, and one way is by sporting college and university apparel the first Wednesday of every month. This Wednesday, we encourage our students to join the RLES staff in representing the diverse institutions of higher learning, and to be curious and inquisitive with one another about those that may be unfamiliar.

    Attendance Boundary Meeting THIS Thursday

The opening of Elementary School #21 will impact attendance boundaries for Rowe Lane, Riojas, and Dearing Elementary Schools. Rowe Lane is hosting an information session this Thursday, December 8, from 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Library. More information, including the community meetings schedule and proposed boundary changes maps, may be found at this link: http://www.pfisd.net/Page/6313

    Spike in Late Arrivals

As a friendly reminder, students are able to enter the building as early as 7:10 a.m., can enter classrooms at 7:20, and must be in class by 7:40. We have noticed a steady increase in the number of students arriving tardy to class, which seems to correlate with the colder weather and more families opting to use the car line instead of walking/driving. Please anticipate that on-time arrival may require earlier departure as we move into the winter months.

    Parent Portal for Focus

PfISD uses Focus as our student information system. Among other things, parents have the ability to access student grades and attendance information. If you do not already have access, or if you need access information, please contact our Registrar, Madeline.Sheppard@pfisd.net , to get connected.

    Holiday Shoppe NEXT WEEK

Our Holiday Shoppe will be open for the week of December 12 - 15 in the science lab. Thank you to our PTO for providing this time-honored tradition that allows our students to do some "secret shopping" on their own for family and loved ones. Items are available for as little as $1 in order to accommodate any budget. The Holiday Shoppe also will be open the evening of Tuesday, December 13, from 6 – 8:00pm for family shopping.

    5th Grade Performance NEXT WEEK

We had some inquiries about parents attending the dress rehearsal during the school day for the 5th grade music performance. During the dress rehearsal, we fill the cafeteria with students from selected grade levels and cannot accommodate adult seating. Please do join us for the polished evening performance at 6:30pm on December 13!

    Parents’ Night Out

HHS Cheerleaders and Boosters are hosting a Parent’s Night Out on 12/10 and 12/17. Please take a look at the attached flier if you would like to take advantage of the opportunity and support HHS Cheer.

    Little Cheerleader Workshop

Hendrickson Hawk Cheer will be hosting a Little Cheerleader Workshop on Saturday, December 10th, from 9-11 in the HHS gym.   The Little Cheerleaders will perform at the basketball game on December 16th.  Join us as we learn chants, cheers, dances, stunting and tumbling!  Cost:  $30.00 (t-shirt included).  Sign up at this link

Simple Ways to Support Rowe Lane

    1) Painless Fundraiser – You can make a tax-deductible donation to the school simply by following this link or by sending in a cash or check according to the guidance in the attached letter.

    Rocket Families,

Thank you for the tremendous turn out of support this past week. We had a packed house for the Veterans Day Program last Wednesday, and, we set a new all-time record for sales at the Book Fair! Way to go, Rowe!

In observation of this season of giving, I will keep the three following items in rotation on the weekly Update through the end of the calendar year. These represent some of the simplest ways you directly can impact the resources we have available to maintain an exceptional education for our Rockets:

    1) Painless Fundraiser – For the past two years, Rowe Lane has adopted a painless fundraiser instead of traditional product sales drives to raise funds that help us maintain an extraordinary education for our students. You can make a tax-deductible donation to the school simply by following this link or by sending in a cash or check according to the guidance in the attached letter.

    2) Amazon Smile – Everything you purchase through Amazon.com has the potential to translate into dollars for Rowe Lane. Simply visit https://smile.amazon.com/ and designate Rowe Lane Elementary as your beneficiary. Then, shop and support RLES at NO ADDITIONAL COST to you – year round!

    3) Corporate Giving – Many employers, including Dell, Apple, and 3M, have robust corporate giving campaigns and have made donations to our school because you designated us as the recipient. Please inquire at your workplace or contact RLESPTO@gmail.com to investigate how to connect us with this generosity.

Shout Outs go to our 4th grade parents and volunteers who provided costumes and set decorations to help make our most ambitious Veterans Day program yet a success. Thank you for all the time and effort!

Read on for more details, and I wish everyone a safe and pleasant time with friends and family during the Thanksgiving break all next week.

    Ben

    Coats For Kids

Did you know that 14% of children in Travis County and 74% of children in Del Valle live at or below the poverty line? These children are in our own backyard and spend many cold mornings waiting for their school bus. That's where our community steps up and comes in!

We will have a bin for you to drop off new or gently used coats. The bin will be located in the foyer between November 14th - November 30th.  For reaching our goal of 400 coats, the PTO is rewarding our generous Rockets with a FREE pass to Mt. Playmore just in time for use over the Winter Break!

    Pies Please

We could use a few more Pie Donations to take us over the top for our teacher hospitality event this month.   Please click this link if you can help with covering the last few items. We are very close to having enough for everyone!

    Attendance Boundary Changes for 2017-2018

The opening of Elementary School #21 will impact attendance boundaries for Rowe Lane, Riojas, and Dearing Elementary Schools. PfISD will hold Community Input meetings at each affected campus beginning at the end of this month. More information, including the community meetings schedule and proposed boundary changes maps, may be found at this link: http://www.pfisd.net/Page/6313

    Thanksgiving Meal THIS THURSDAY

Parents and family members are welcome to join students for a Thanksgiving meal, which will be served by our Food Services team in the cafeteria during your student’s usual lunch period this Thursday, November 17. Adult meals may be purchased for $3.75 either by sending in cash or a check made out to RLES by Wednesday, November 16. Parents also may simply deposit money in a student’s online account. Options for entrees include traditional Turkey with Gravy and stuffing, or a hamburger or cheeseburger. Please email any inquiries to RLES.Cafe@pfisd.net

    Blue Out THIS FRIDAY

November is men’s health awareness month, and we will do our part by observing a “Blue Out” this Friday. Students and staff are encouraged to wear blue on Friday, November 18, to show solidarity in the fight against cancer and raise awareness about men’s health in general.

    GT Nomination Window

The GT nomination window runs through this Friday, November 18. Please visit our Counselor, Mrs. Payne’s, website and the PfISD GT Program page  for more information.

    Rocket Families,

November traditionally ushers in the season of giving, and while Rowe Lane is fortunate that our community seems to hold that spirit the whole year round, I wanted to remind you of some other, simple ways you can benefit our school:

    1) Amazon Smile – Everything you purchase through Amazon.com has the potential to translate into dollars for Rowe Lane. Simply visit https://smile.amazon.com/ and designate Rowe Lane Elementary as your beneficiary. Then, shop and support RLES at NO ADDITIONAL COST to you.

    2) Corporate Giving – Many employers, including Dell, Apple, and 3M, have robust corporate giving campaigns and have made donations to our school because you designated us as the recipient. Please inquire at your workplace or contact RLESPTO@gmail.com to investigate.

    3) Painless Fundraiser – For the past two years, Rowe Lane has adopted a painless fundraiser instead of traditional product sales drives to raise funds that help us maintain an exceptional education our students. Details on how to participate will follow in a separate communication this month.

Shout Outs go to Tanya Callejas and Portia Saucedo, who once again went ALL OUT to transform our library for this week’s book fair, and to our many parents who provided delicious snacks for teacher preview day last Friday. Thank you!

We have an eventful week ahead of us, especially this Wednesday, when Rowe Lane will be THE place to be. Read on for more details, and I hope to see everyone this week.

We encourage guests to arrive early for the 6:30pm show; however, doors to the cafeteria will remain closed until 6:15pm  to accommodate our students who attend the Extended Day Program after school. Guests are invited to visit the “Bookaneer” Book Fair in the library before and after either performance.

From 5-8pm this Wednesday we will keep the Book Fair open late for families to shop together. In addition to picking up some new reads for your child, please stop by the book fair to view your teacher’s classroom wish list, which will supplement classroom libraries. Also, parents, friends, and extended family can place online orders and benefit Rowe Lane using the second link. This past Friday we had an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge students in Kinder through 5th grade for their hard work, character, consistency, and achievements. I am so proud of our Rockets and the positive attitude they bring to school each day. As a campus, we are emphasizing tracking progress toward our goals. Consider engaging your child with a casual conversation about how he or she improved or grew so far this school year. Their answers sometimes surprise us, and may indicate areas they feel are particularly important. Coaching your child to identify just one goal and helping him or her to remain conscious of their progress toward achieving it can have lasting benefits.

Shout Outs go to our PTO, who delivered Nothing Bundt Cakes to the Rowe Lane staff this week, and to Mike Porter and his men's group who organized and completed work on a world map now painted behind our gym. Thank you once again to this incredibly generous community for the many ways you give to our school!

If you will be attending our Veterans Day celebration and will be honoring a Veteran, please complete the requests from Mr. Bennet by using the links below, and read on for further notices, updates, and opportunities.

    College T-Shirt Day THIS WEDNESDAY
We are raising awareness about the many, many, colleges and universities our students could choose for their post-secondary education. Please encourage your child to wear an outfit to represent a college or university this Wednesday, November 2 and the first Wednesday of every month this school year. Even better, encourage your child to look for someone sporting a college or university that is unfamiliar and ask some questions to learn more.

    Rocket Families,

It was a day of professional development for PfISD teachers across the district today, and I am bursting with pride that Rowe Lane teachers were asked to provide training to our colleagues from other elementary schools. Our teachers answered the call and shared their insight and know-how with incorporating student devices into rigorous instruction. I know this is common knowledge, but it bears repeating having seen and heard their presentations today – Rowe Lane teachers are exceptional. Ask your kids about some of the things they have been doing in class this past month with our new tablets and laptops – and thank you for making it possible by passing the most recent Bond!

Read on for more details and notices on the week ahead,

PTO Meeting This TUESDAY Oct. 11

Our October PTO meeting will be held next week on Tuesday, October 11 from 6:30 – 7:30pm. Prior to the meeting, we will hold our annual Open Meeting to review Rowe Lane’s Accountability Report. The meeting will run from 6:00 – 6:30pm in the RLES Library and will review Rowe Lane’s performance this past school year on the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR tests) as well as Distinctions our school earned.

Flu Clinic this TUESDAY October 11

Healthy Schools will be back on Tuesday, October 11th in the morning to vaccinate any students who were not able to be seen during the first visit. We will not need a new consent form, but do check to see if your child came home with a form requiring corrections or additional information.

    Crossing Guard & Lunch Monitor

We have an opening immediately for our lunch monitor and crossing guard position. If you would be willing, please reach out to our Administrator Intern, Erika.Cruz@pfisd.net.

    Music Performances this Year

Our first music performance will be held later this month, beginning with our 3rd grade students. All performances will be scheduled in the evenings, as always. We ask this year that parents please not attend the “practice performance” that happens during the school day. We invite our students to attend those performances and cannot accommodate additional attendees. The exception is our Veterans Day Celebration in November, which will be open to families for both the morning and evening events.

    Food Drive next Week

Cub Scout Pack 685 Wolf Den 2 is comprised of ten second graders from Rowe Lane Elementary. In Texas, more than 1 in 6 adults and 1 in 4 children are food insecure. To help support our local Pflugerville food pantry, The Storehouse, Den 2 is holding a week-long food drive at Rowe Lane from Monday October 17th through Friday October 21st. Items can be dropped off at the tables outside the cafeteria during morning drop-off throughout the week. Desired items needed by The Storehouse include:

    Canned soups & ready-to-eat chili
    Canned fruits & vegetables
    Cold cereals & oatmeal
Canned meats (tuna, chicken, ham, etc.)
(Note: think like a tween looking for something to eat -- snacks and meals that are easy to open, and easy to cook [microwaveable] or ready to eat.)
    Peanut butter & Jelly
    Beans, Rice, & Pasta
Tomato products: sauce, diced, spaghetti sauce
    Fruit juice
    Crackers & cookies
Boxed dinners (e.g. macaroni & cheese)
Toilet Paper, paper towels, trash bags
    Soap (bar or liquid)
    Diapers
Thank you for supporting helping us raise awareness and to support local families!
