Spring Hill Elementary School

PFLUGERVILLE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT

On Friday evening at the annual African-American History Celebration, our students pushed back against the concept of a nation divided. In spite of the deluge of negative messages coming from the media that frame current events in binaries, allowing only one side to emerge as the winner, Spring Hill Elementary students stood strong in their mission to contribute positivity and hope to their community.

In our school, diversity unites rather than divides us, and if you attended the event you know exactly what I mean. I would like to offer a special thanks to Mrs. Elaine Mosely, a career public educator, who travelled many miles to deliver her message of optimism and courage to our students. Additionally, we thank the community for such a large turnout and the energy you helped us build with our students.

Although the events slow down a little this week, we are not letting up with our intensity about ensuring we are delivering the best instruction for our students. Tomorrow we will spend the day getting sharper in our practices and look forward to seeing the students, and each of you, back on campus Tuesday.

    Dr. Troy Pitsch,
    Principal

    Don’t Forget!

The students have the day off tomorrow while your SHES Teaching Team spends some time getting better, stronger, and faster to the point where the Six Million Dollar Man asks us for private tutoring. We will see everyone back on Tuesday!

    Feeling a Little Chicken?

Tomorrow from 5 to 8 p.m. you can get your chicken fix at Chick-Fil-A at Stone Hill and help the Spring Hill PTO raise money for our students. Sharkie has asked me to give you all extra encouragement to come out and support our school lest they decide to switch their franchise over to “Shark-Fil-A”.

    Congratulations!

It is my great honor to announce the Spring Hill Elementary Teacher of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year. Please join us in celebrating our best among the awesome Spring Hill team:

    • Teacher of the Year: Mrs. Allyson Patterson

Mrs. Patterson joined our 5th grade team in the 2014-15 school year and quickly earned the love and admiration of both her students and colleagues. Allyson has practiced strong instruction for her students and demonstrated solid leadership within the ELA department from the moment of her arrival.

This year she was appointed to be the 5th grade Team Leader and has continued to be a consistent and reliable anchor in that role. The Spring Hill staff has voiced admiration for her calm disposition in the fast-paced environment of our school and know her to be an excellent teacher with the ability to face down any challenge that impedes the forward progress of her students. Her energy, warm personality, and unwavering devotion to our Sharks has earned her this prestigious award.

Thank you, Mrs. Patterson, for your incredible contributions and dedication to Spring Hill Elementary!

    • Humanitarian of the Year: Mrs. Daisy Luna

Mrs. Luna became our Title I Parent Liaison at the beginning of the 2015 school year and the impact of her talents was immediately felt across the campus and Spring Hill Community alike. Daisy has arrived each day to serve as the oil that keeps all the parts of our campus machine running flawlessly. Further, her welcoming smile has greeted Spring Hill students, parents and visitors each day and she has worked tirelessly to enhance the connection between our school and the community we serve with great success.

In their voting submissions, the SHES team has been loud and clear about her resourcefulness in her position and her ability to handle things in a pinch before they get the chance to become challenges to our important work. Her total devotion to the Spring Hill Elementary community through service to our children and families has earned her this year’s title.

We recognize Mrs. Luna this year for her amazing success as the welcoming face for our school!

Look out everyone…Spring Hill Elementary is going to serve as the place to be all week long and I can’t wait to get started! In addition to wonderful opportunities to feature the exciting work and incredible talent of our students and staff, it is always a great pleasure to hold our doors wide open for the community to come and be together under one roof in the name of school excellence! Be sure to look over the events this week and know that there will be a place waiting for you each and every day.

Please help us acknowledge our Teacher of the Year and Humanitarian of the Year winners for 2016-17 who were identified by the Spring Hill teachers and staff as our champions among champions for our school. It is through their efforts, and those of our SHES team, that help us deliver on the promise of public education to the students of the Spring Hill Family.

And…it’s gone! Yes, January has already passed and we are approaching the halfway point of the third nine weeks. We have spent a lot of time in the classrooms observing our practices and it is evident that students and teachers are bringing their A-Game every single day! The kids are heavily engaged and our teachers are really getting full use out of our mobile technology with Google Classroom and other learning applications that promote collaborative learning and help us address the individual needs of each student. Press ahead Sharks … our biggest challenge awaits us!

We have a quiet couple of days before the evening activities kick off again during the following week. What a great time this might be to come by and eat lunch with your student some afternoon and be part of the fun things that happen every day at Spring Hill Elementary!

Yesterday our Sharks were in academic competition against students representing schools across PfISD. The Spring Hill family knows how great our students are, but now the entire district knows our strength after the Sharks brought home the gold by finishing first overall among Dual Language campuses!

We owe our competing students, parents, coaches, and UIL Coordinator Julieta Montes a huge round of applause for representing our school so well. We are all so incredibly proud of Spring Hill Elementary!

Thanks to all of our students and their families who came out to support the Fifth Grade Graduation ceremony by attending the Family Movie Night Friday evening. It’s always great to have everyone together enjoying a good time while moving towards our goal of making another awesome graduation celebration for our awesome fifth grade Sharks!

We have a busy month of learning and fun planned for February, so please feel welcome to come and join us at every opportunity. We will be sure to look for you…have a great week!

Spring Hill Elementary students constantly give us things to toot our horns about! Our Dual Language UIL Team has returned from the district Spanish Spelling Bee with a second place finish among the nine Spanish Language campuses in PfISD. Way to be SHARKS! Next year we will take home the gold!

A special thanks to our parents and guardians who helped to return all the forms from the St. David’s Dental Health Screening this year. We had a 100 percent return rate on the opt-out forms which earned our school $1,000 for the effort! Thanks to all.

Looks like the temperature will be moving up and down the thermometer this week, so please be sure your child is dressed for the morning commute and has a jacket to wear when students are outside at recess. We will see you soon!

Today we celebrate the life and contributions of the great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., architect of the 1960’s national movement for equality and unity for all Americans regardless of group membership. His time on this earth was too short, while his mission against intolerance remains with us today. On this day especially we are reminded of a difficult question: Have we carried on his work or have we squandered these years, distracted by the message falsely proclaiming that we have arrived? History will be the judge of how we prepared our students to further the work of Dr. King to its completion.

We have a few events coming up on the calendar, so please come and be with us when these opportunities arrive. The only thing more glorious than celebrating our students is doing it when all of us are together. Have a great week!

We have officially begun the second half of our school year, and it was wonderful to have everyone back at Spring Hill Elementary! Our students were so amazing this week in their behavior and focus on learning, and it seemed like we never even had a break by the way everyone picked up where we left off at the end of 2016. As we move through the next several busy months, I would like to thank everyone in advance for their continued support of Spring Hill Elementary.

January is making a point of reminding us it is winter with chilly temperatures. Please make note than on frigid days we will elect to dismiss students from inside the building. Our parents did a great job with this on Friday and we want to thank you for your patience with the process. Have a great week!

St. David’s Dental Van will be coming on Jan. 9-11. Your student will be screened unless they return the “opt out” flyer indicating you do not want your student to be screened. Students in need of treatment will receive a consent form to take home. Please return all consent forms even if you say no to treatment. The consent forms will not have the exact treatment to be done. However most treatments consist of sealants and addressing cavities. If you have any questions about this awesome service St. David’s gives our school, please contact Nurse Mahn at 512-594-5400.

    Attention 5th Grade Parents

We will be coming together to discuss this year’s fifth grade graduation ceremony and festivities this Thursday at 6:15 p.m. in the SHES library. If you have a fifth grade student, you will want to make this meeting to find out all the important information pertaining to this year’s graduation. We want to continue to make this special for our students, and want you to be a part of this.

    Lost Something?

This is the time of year where the Lost & Found grows exponentially with orphaned jackets and gloves. If your student is missing an item, please come by and check on the stage to see if it is in our collection of lost items.

    Speaking of Lost Items

We want to encourage you to write your child’s name and grade on their coats and jackets that come to school in case they leave them somewhere. It makes it much easier to return these items to their owners, so please consider labelling your student’s personal property.

I want to begin this Sentinel by wishing all of our Spring Hill Elementary family a Happy New Year! We are hopeful that everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday break filled with family time and togetherness with the ones you love. If you didn’t catch the date, Spring Hill Elementary will re-open its doors at 7 a.m. on Tuesday to receive our awesome Sharks!

As you may know, things really pick up quickly for the second semester as we prepare our campus for our state assessments. Student attendance is everything during this period, so keep the kids bundled up and healthy while the weather is chilly. We can’t wait to see everyone back Jan. 3. Have a great week!

Cold Weather Brings New Challenges in different forms. Please keep in mind that as temperatures drop, more parents will drive their students to school. This will lead to higher volumes of vehicles in the morning and afternoon and this can affect travel time. Please keep a watchful eye out for students on foot, and other drivers, on the trip to and from school.

Our students continue their progress towards making a year or more of academic growth. You can see it in their work displayed in the halls, and the fantastic things we see them doing during our classroom visits. Nothing can stop our Sharks, and the world is theirs!

We have a lot of things coming up on the calendar in the next two weeks, so take a look and plan on coming out to be with us. Don’t forget to have your Sharks read nightly for 20 minutes as a way to settle in for a good night’s rest. Have a great week!

    Got Some Extras?

If you have clothes that the kids have outgrown, Nurse Mahn has informed me of a shortage of spare clothing for students to change into when accidents happen. We would greatly appreciate any items you would be willing to share with our sharks.

Have a little Cocoa with Santa

On Saturday the 10th, the PTO will bring this annual event to our school from 9 a.m. to noon. Come out for a photo-op with Santa, browse through the Shark Shop, and enjoy being together with the Spring Hill Elementary family. We hope to see you there!

Santa’s Shark Shop is Opening Soon!

Beginning with the PTO Cocoa with Santa event on the morning of Dec. 10, Santa’s Shark Shop will be open through the week of the 12th for your student’s holiday shopping needs. Watch for the flyer coming home this week!

Can’t wait until it’s Five Below!

During this weekend, any purchases made at Five Below will send 10 percent of it to our SHES PTO! That is a great way to knock out some holiday shopping and support the school at the same time. Happy Holidays!
