    Thursday, May 24, 2018

Park Crest Middle School, 1500 N Railroad Ave, Pflugerville, TX 78660

Time Requirement: Sign in and breakfast begins at 7:45 a.m. Merchants need to be at their table by 8:30 a.m. The simulation will run from 8:55 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

    Description

Mad City Money is an interactive and engaging simulation for youth. Each participant receives an “about me” sheet that contains an occupation and salary, student loan debt owed, credit card debt owed, and cost of medical insurance. Some participants will have a spouse and some will be single. Every participant will have a child.

Participants build a monthly budget based on their incomes. They visit nine merchants in Mad City to purchase housing, transportation, food, day care, and other needs. There’s a mall for wants and a credit union for financial services. Students will also visit the Fickle Finger of Fate during the simulation for unexpected windfalls and unplanned expenses.

    Participant Objectives

    • Practice budgeting as an adult with realistic circumstances

    • Identify and experience the consequences of poor decision making

    • Develop good judgment regarding spending and making a budget

    • Understand that budgeting is a necessary step in good money management and that it isn’t difficult.

    Merchant Role

There are nine merchant stations in Mad City. They are:

    • Really Realty & Utilities

    • Gotta Eat!

    • Fun Stuff

    • Kid Care

    • Home Stuff

    • Big Wheels New & Used

    • My Closet

    • Mad City Mall

    • Fickle Finger of Fate

As a merchant, you will be selling products and services to the students. Your job is to act like a salesperson and try to get the student to buy the most expensive products. You are not there to help them make the best choice. You will show the selections to participants and help them make their choice. The students will have fake debit cards to make purchases with. You will write them a receipt for their purchase.

We will provide each merchant table with props, signs, calculators, pens, and more. You will not have to worry about bringing anything to the simulation, unless you have a calculator you like to use.
