The U.S. Army Field Band’s Jazz Ambassadors will stop at Connally High School next month as part of its 2017 Spring Tour.

The 19-member military ensemble, which has toured throughout the United States and abroad, visits the Connally Performing Arts Center April 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are free of charge and will be available at the PfISD Administration Building, 1401 W. Pecan St., beginning March 20. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“We are honored that the Jazz Ambassadors have chosen to perform one of their concerts in Pflugerville ISD this year,” said PfISD Fine Arts Director Manuel Gamez. “Our community is in for a rare treat. You don’t want to miss it.”

Established in 1969, the Jazz Ambassadors ensemble is billed as the official “touring big band” of the U.S. Army. Its repertoire includes contemporary jazz as well as swing, bebop, Latin, Dixieland and patriotic favorites. Notable performances have included concerts at international jazz festivals in Montreux, Switzerland and Newport, R.I. and World War II 50th anniversary shows throughout Europe in 1995.

The group has also been featured in unique joint concerts under the direction of Marvin Hamlisch with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Pops, the Colorado Pops Orchestra and the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall.

The ensemble is formed through a competitive audition process that regularly draws candidates from conservatories, universities and professional ranks.

Three members of the Connally band are scheduled to briefly perform alongside the Jazz Ambassadors during the April 10 concert. Gamez will provide opening remarks, and members of the Hendrickson High School Marine Junior ROTC program will present the colors for the national anthem. Ensemble members will visit with audience members after the show.

The public is invited to attend. Connally High School is located at 13212 N. Lamar, Austin.
