Connally PAC renamed in honor of Portillo

Longtime PfISD fine arts coordinator opened Connally band program
Pflugerville ISD is recognizing the contributions of longtime fine arts coordinator Luis “Chico” Portillo by renaming the Connally High School Performing Arts Center in his honor on May 17 in conjunction with the 20th Anniversary Celebration of CHS.

The anniversary celebration will begin at 5 p.m. followed by the PAC dedication at 6:30 p.m. There will be a tour of the school, as well as artifacts from Connally’s 20-year history on display outside the PAC.

The dedication event will honor Portillo for his contributions to the arts in Pflugerville ISD over his 25 years of service in the district. It will include several performances, including both current and former students, along with an appreciation video for Portillo.

Any former students or staff who would like to take part in the performance can contact current CHS band director Marcos Telles at 512-594-0867 or via email at Anyone who would like to submit a short video clip in appreciation of Chico Portillo should do so through YouTube by 5 p.m. Monday, May 1. (Instructions for the video are below.)

PfISD board members in February approved the renaming, which transpired upon the urging of a grassroots campaign of former students, band parents and co-workers.

“Putting my name on the Performing Arts Center is a tremendous honor,” said Portillo, who retired last year. “However, I want to acknowledge that many people in Pflugerville ISD have been instrumental in the success I have enjoyed as a teacher and administrator. Everyone I have had the privilege to work with will own a part of the name that goes on the Connally Performing Arts Center.”

Portillo worked his way up the ranks from assistant band director at Westview Middle School to head band director at Westview and Connally High School before becoming PfISD fine arts coordinator. He was the first band director at Connally.

“I enjoyed starting the band program from its inception and working with the students, staff and parents to make Connally an extraordinary place,” he said.

“I also enjoyed my time as an administrator, supporting all of the fine arts teachers in the district. I quickly realized that PfISD had, and still has, phenomenal fine arts teachers across the district.”

A group of more than 60 former students, band parents and PfISD employees signed a petition in favor of renaming the PAC after Portillo.

“Chico has had his hands in every band program in the district, even before he moved to his leadership role at central office,” the petition read, “from helping design the arts facilities at both Connally and Hendrickson, to collaborating with the other programs, and even facilitating pre-game band dinners at Connally and Hendrickson back when they were cross-town rivals.
