Two PfISD Schools Win Coats For Kids Drive
December 6, 2018 – Every year leading into the holiday break, schools in Central Texas collect coats to donate to those in need through the Coats For Kids Coat Drive. And again, this year Pflugerville ISD schools were among the most active in the region, with two schools winning the drive for their division.
Pflugerville High School was the top performing high school in Central Texas, for what is believed to be the 11th year in a row, while Rowe Lane Elementary more than doubled its goal to win the elementary division.
PHS collected 1,723 coats to donate to the cause. PHS has been the top high school in the region for some time thanks to all the student groups that help spearhead the donation efforts. Students from the Ready Set Teach program collected the coats.
Representatives from the schools were on KVET Austin 98.1 FM during the Bama, Rob & Heather morning show Wednesday live on location at the Rudy’s Bar-B-Que on 183 and Duval Rd. in Austin, where sponsors of the drive were celebrating the success of another Coats For Kids. The donation from PHS was up 71 percent from last year according to KVET.
“My students blow me away every year,” said PHS Ready Set Teach coordinator Brettany Kokes. “This year, I had help from another group that joined us – the Pflugerville Panther baseball team. They were awesome. Thank you for all of the efforts of these wonderful kids surrounding me and to my staff and co-workers at Pflugerville High School.”
PHS senior Amir Wiley said this charity event is one that students at Pflugerville are passionate about and know it is one way they can make an impact on the community.
“We love giving back and that’s what it stands for,” Wiley said. “We want to make sure that those who are less fortunate than us, we can give back to them by giving our time to them and collecting those coats.”
Rowe Lane Elementary originally set out to collect 500 coats for this year’s drive. Principal Ben O’Connor was pleasantly surprised when his students came in with a total of more than 1,000 coats to be the top performing elementary school in the area for the second time in three years.
“I am so pleased that our Rockets have rallied around the Coats For Kids Drive again and even managed to double their goal this year,” O’Connor said. “Helping other children to have a coat for winter is a cause every student at Rowe Lane from Pre-K to 5th grade understood, and they also realized they had the ability to make an impact. There have been many examples of our students giving back to the community over the years and earning the honor of being the school to collect the most coats for the Austin area underscores the magnitude of that spirit and the generosity of our local community.
“Around here we like to say, ‘Rockets Go Above and Beyond.’ You can see our kids living up to that mantra in endless ways each day at school. Today, I am proud that we clearly are raising civic-minded students here in Pflugerville who also seem to have learned what we mean by ‘passionately serving’ in PfISD.”
O’Connor said his students were successful in collecting so many coats thanks in large part to the Daisy Troop stationed outside each morning at drop off with signs and bags at the ready to receive the coats.
