Code2College helps 21 PfISD students earn summer internships

June 27, 2019

As summer got underway, many Pflugerville ISD high school students headed to paid internships at a number of businesses and corporations thanks to their participation in an afterschool program.

Code2College is a private afterschool program launched in Fall 2016 with the mission of dramatically increasing the number of minority and low-income high school students who enter and excel in STEM undergraduate majors and careers. Over the past two years, the program has worked with more than 100 PfISD students at Hendrickson High School and Pflugerville High School.

Matt Stephenson, Code2College executive director, said that last year, the program was able to help place six PfISD students into paid internships. This year, that number has more than tripled, with 21 students headed to paid internships over the summer where they will be able to apply what they have learned in the classroom and in the Code2College program.

HHS and PHS principals budgeted funds for students interested in applying to and participating in the program. Participants receive instruction in coding from volunteers representing leading companies in the tech industry. They also visit the offices of these companies once a month on the weekends to meet with employees, develop a variety of professional skills beyond coding and see other types of work done in STEM fields.

Companies that have provided volunteers to teach the coding classes include: Indeed, Google and RetailMeNot. Some of the companies involved have also hosted case competitions at their offices and awarded scholarships to graduating seniors who took part in the program. This year Google Fiber donated new laptops to every graduating senior who completed the program.

Code2College works with multiple school districts in Central Texas and had more than 100 students complete its program this year with approximately 75 coming PfISD schools.

Students interested in applying for Code2College or participating in its summer professional workshop series can get more information at Code2College.org.

Code2College is just one of many opportunities PfISD students have to gain valuable experience in the workforce. PfISD Career and Technical Education also helps place students in internships. CTE Director Traci Hendrix said the District had 70 students participate in internships during the 2018-19 school year through various CTE programs offered by PfISD.
