Board postpones Trustee election to November
Due the COVID-19 Pandemic and shelter-in-place orders from Travis and Williamson counties, the Board of Trustee election scheduled for May 2 has been postponed until the General Election in November. On the ballot for November are Places 6 and 7. Since this is a postponement, the process will pick up where it left off, with no additional filing deadlines. The current Board will remain in place until the election in November.
Employee Contracts issued in April
Administrator, Professional, and Educator contracts will be issued this month. From the time of issuance, there is a two-week window to sign the contract. Any employee who receives a contract and does not sign by the due date will be exited through OEMS and will need to reapply for employment with the District for the 2020-21 school year.
Cybersecurity Training Required
All staff must still complete the mandatory online cybersecurity training required from House Bill 3834. Staff who have not completed the training will receive new notices through the KnowBe4 Training. Staff have until May 1, 2020 to complete the training.
Meet PfISD's Lead Social Worker
At Pflugerville ISD, we have a mix of new and tenured, young and experienced student and staff. Below is a spotlight on just one we’re proud to call a member of our Pfamily:
Coordinator: Vicky Esparza-Gregory, licensed clinical social worker, the school district’s first social worker, started in 2002
Department structure: Thirteen social workers, each a licensed mental health professional, assigned to campuses and to support Special Education services
Pflugerville ISD social workers assist families and students needing additional support with basic needs, as well as students struggling with mental health issues.
“The social workers serve the student from a whole child approach,” said Esparza-Gregory. “When we are called, it is typically because there’s either a basic need that needs to be assessed or a mental health need we can help to address.”
Social workers will assist families with community resources, such as referrals to other mental health resources, to food banks and to housing.
Confidentiality is important with their jobs, so district social workers aren’t as easily recognizable as a police officer or firefighter. But the services they provide are vital to those they assist.
“I think it’s important to state that these times, in our community and in our country, have caused our legislators to look at mental health services, and how those services in a school setting can be beneficial for our students,” said Esparza-Gregory. “I’m very proud this district supports the social workers and how we do provide therapeutic interventions to help support the mental health needs of our students.”
Reading Academy Cohort Leaders Needed
With the passing of House Bill 3 (HB 3) in June of 2019, all kindergarten through third grade teachers and principals must attend a Reading Academy in the next three years. Cohort Leaders are the lead facilitators for the K-3 Reading Academies. They will be essential to the Reading Academies as they deliver the content to staff members and provide feedback to staff as they complete each portion of the Reading Academy. If you are interested in becoming a Cohort Leader, please apply at the Reading Academies – Cohort Leader Screener Registration page. Certified Cohort Leaders will receive a stipend to lead Reading Academy sessions with TEA Authorized Providers in the years to come.
Registration is open April 15-April 29. You will have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 to complete the screener.
Another registration window will become available in May. TEA does not foresee any other windows for the Cohort Leader opportunity so don’t miss out on your chance to become a Cohort Leader.

Grants, Scholarship Deadlines Extended!
The Pflugerville Education Foundation is extending its deadlines for grants and scholarships to April 30, 2020. For applications, please go to thepfoundation.org. Applications are being accepted for the Mott Family Scholarship, the Extended Day Program Scholarship, and Luminary Nominations. Innovative Grants and Mini-Grants are being accepted and are due by April 30, 2020. Information and applications can be found on the PEF website.
Pfund Pfamilies in Need
The Pfund PfISD Pfamilies in Need Campaign was launched on April 9, 2020 by a collaboration of partners including PEF and PfISD's Dept. of Social Work. For more information or to make a donation, please visit the campaign page. PEF is offering a challenge grant of $10,000 to match donations received from the community. As of April 16, more than $6,000 has been raised.
A+ Education Foundation Grant Application Now Available
A+ Education Foundation, a philanthropic arm of A+ Federal Credit Union, invites Central Texas Educators to apply for a 2020 A+ Education Foundation Grant of up to $1,500 to fund innovative programs for their students.
“We’re excited to announce that the A+ Education Foundation is increasing the grant amount from $1,000 to $1,500 for this year,” Georgia Johnson, A+ Education Foundation President, said. “We are committed to growing our grant program and continuing to offer more assistance to educators as they provide innovative and interactive learning experiences for the students.”
Since its inception in 2005, the A+ Education Foundation has awarded over $907,000 to 987 grant recipients in schools and districts across Central Texas.
Grant applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, 2020. Professionally-Certified Educators (grades Pre-K through 12) in the schools in the A+ Federal Credit Union’s field of membership may apply. Grant winners will be notified by July 15, 2020. The Board of Trustees hosted it's first virtual meeting in history on April 9. The Board Members met via Zoom and live-streamed its meeting on the district's YouTube channel. During the meeting, the Board voted to postpone the scheduled May Board of Trustee election to the November General Election. Additionally, the Board approved a resolution regarding Class Rank, Grading, GPA, and Promotion.
